Julie Van de Vort - Miss Sacramento 1961
(An excerpt from The Sacramento Bee, 1982)
The day Julie Van De Vort (Julie Curry) was crowned, she said her goal was to sing in Broadway musicals. She gave it a shot, but found out it wasn't what she wanted. "I went to L.A. for a while," she says, "but it was just really hard to break into that business and live that kind of life. I met my husband there - he was a dancer - and we decided that we wanted other things." She moved back to the Sacramento area with her husband, Jere, and both became dance instructors. Today, the 40-year-old Curry tutors young dancers at the Davis Art Center. Curry, who at the time attended San Juan High school in Citrus Heights, said she entered the Miss Sacramento contest mainly for the opportunity of singing - just once - on the Memorial Auditorium stage. "My father was a singer," she says, "and I wanted to do that. The contest was a vehicle to realize that dream."
